Top High Tech Companies To Watch For 2014

Tom Armistead, of Streetwise Reports' The Energy Report, recently interviewed Evan Smith, co-portfolio manager of US Global Investors' Global Resources Fund. Here are some of the highlights from Smith.

At US Global Investors' Global Resources Fund (PSPFX:US) we take a diversified approach to natural resources investing: energy, food, timber, base metals, precious metals, and chemicals.

We're attracted to opportunities like Sanchez Energy Corp. (SN) and Bellatrix Exploration Ltd. (TSX:BXE).

Sanchez went public just a couple years ago. It had a decent-sized position in the Eagle Ford, which it has grown to over 125,000 acresretty sizeable for a small-cap. Sanchez was producing 600 barrels of oil equivalent per day (600 boe/d); now it's over 12,000 boe/d and should be around 15,000-17,000 by the end of the year.

When it became public, its acreage was in the Eagle Ford, but not all the Eagle Ford acreage is the same. Sanchez was a little on-the-fringe, not considered as attractive as some plays. But the company has shown that it's very competitive and that the wells have performed better than expected.

Most of the Chinese companies that I purchased now reside on the Pink Sheets or have disappeared altogether, but at one time they all traded on major US exchanges. One of them (AOB), even received the honor of ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange in 2007, and people say that crime does not pay.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By David Dittman]

Question: If an investor has a long term outlook, would you consider El Paso Pipeline Partners LP (NYSE: EPB) at current prices to be a good value or does the risk of trying to catch a falling knife outweigh the benefits? At what price would you consider it to be an excellent value play given its projected flat distribution through 2016? How likely is a distribution cut prior to re-establishing distribution growth in 2017?

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Paul McWilliams]

Paul McWilliams: Oh, yeah. Let's touch on just a couple of them really quickly. First off, there's Finisar (FNSR). Finisar is a world leader in fiber optic components and substances. It's not as big as JDSU in revenue, but half of JDSU is capital equipment. So, it doesn't compete with Finisar.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

On Wednesday, Finisar (NASDAQ: FNSR  ) will release its latest quarterly results. With the stock having traded down sharply from its highs in early 2011, investors are hoping that the company can finally pull off a long-awaited turnaround and send shares higher.

  • [By jaggom]

The trimming of the revenue guidance by Cisco (CSCO), Finisar(FNSR)'s key customer, led the fiber optics components supplier to suffer severely. Cisco accounted for 17% of Finisar revenue in fiscal 2013 that led to a weak outlook from the networking bellwether resulting in lowering of Finisar shares. However, the recently released results of Finisar proved that there is more to it than just Cisco.

  • [By Wallace Witkowski]

Shares of Finisar Corp. (FNSR) rose 0.3% to $23.96 on moderate volume after the fiber-optic components company reported fiscal third-quarter earnings of 44 cents on revenue of $294 million. Analysts had forecast earnings of 44 cents a share on revenue of $299.1 million. Finisar said it expects earnings of 36 cents to 40 cents a share in the fourth quarter on revenue of $296 million to $311 million, while analysts expect 40 cents a share on revenue of $297.2 million.
