Top 5 Bank Stocks To Buy Right Now

"Steve, I can't manage to buy a house," an attendee told me over the weekend in San Diego at Everbank's Global Currency Expo.   "The last house I tried to buy had 65 offers on it and sold well above asking price."   This guy was not alone...   Conference attendees from Florida to Phoenix told me similar stories. "The deals are gone," they said. So they're giving up.   But fear not, my friends! Market price – or even "above-market price" – on housing in America is still a fantastic deal today. Let me explain...   What's happened in real estate is nothing short of extraordinary...   We went from a market with tons of supply and no demand to a market with no supply and tons of demand.

After dominating the mortgage business throughout 2012, Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC  ) and JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM  ) both reported lower mortgage banking revenue for the first quarter of 2013. While these megabanks lost ground, smaller rival M&T Bank (NYSE: MTB  ) posted a 66% increase in mortgage banking revenue. Is this a sign of the largest banks losing their competitive advantage?

Additionally, the five top lenders, Ally Financial, Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) , Citigroup (NYSE: C  ) , JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM  ) , and Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC  ) , have mostly fulfilledthe terms of the National Mortgage Settlement, the $25 billion mortgage-fraud pact signed last February. Without the added requirements of that pact slowing them down, banks are able to process foreclosures more quickly these days. Of the signatories, only Citidid not increase the number of repossessions last month.

    Going with the crowd
There were a few sound bites that took bank stocks down today, first being continued drops in the Japanese and other Asian markets. As we learned in the past weeks, Asian market weakness is a concern for bank investors. With Citigroup (NYSE: C  ) generating nearly 20% of its revenue in Asian operations, it is more exposed to the slowing economies of that market than any other bank. Both Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) and JPMorgan (NYSE: JPM  ) have Asian segments as well, but their total revenue is only reliant on that area for 4% and 6%, respectively.

Treasuries are rising along with stocks as economists say the Fed will keep suppressing borrowing costs to support the world largest economy after a 16-day government shutdown slowed growth. While government debt was a haven as the U.S. endured the worst recession in seven decades, primary dealers such as Barclays Plc (BARC) and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. say the gains this month show that the Fed $85 billion of monthly bond purchases are masking the risk of owning fixed-income securities as the recovery in America takes hold.

Global recession notwithstanding, International Paper has re-imagined itself as a strong cash generator. I focus upon Free-Cash-Flow (FCF), thereby subtracting routine capital expenditures from Operating Cash. What remains is what Warren Buffett refers to as "Owner Earnings," or what is left over after a company has handled all aspects of running and maintaining its business.
