Quote of the Day

"While we braved these then-fortified beaches to beat back Hitler and to liberate Europe . . . we fought for much more than that. We fought to preserve what our forefathers had died for . . . to protect our faith, to preserve our liberty. . . . I pray that the price we paid on this beach will never be mortgaged, that my grandsons and granddaughters will never face the terror and horror that we faced here. But they must know that without freedom, there is no life and, that the things most worth living for may sometimes demand dying for."

Top Cheap Stocks To Buy For 2014

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- As important as it is to scrutinize Apple's (AAPL) future every which way, it's vital to keep things in perspective. Few journalists do that.

TheStreet's Chris Ciaccia does consistently. The Mac Observer's John Martellaro also brings a sane and nuanced view to his Apple coverage.

In the aptly-titled How the Jealous Investor Community Tries to Punish Apple, Martellaro, once again, nails it: Investment analysts, VCs, and some media sites get a simple-minded idea. Apple should sell cheap iPhones to stop the infestation of cheap Android phones in emerging markets.

It's this flavor of simple-mindedness Martellaro chides that can help morph me into an unabashed AAPL bull. A long-term bearish view on Apple, which I strongly tend toward, doesn't justify putting words in Tim Cook's mouth today or denouncing everything his company does in the near term. "Jealousy" or something like it is the only explanation because there's no logic in the petty criticism. I just can't be associated with it. I'm not sure why analysts and the media would plant the seed that Apple was going to go cheap. It would counter Cook's pledge to never produce "crappy products." And, as Martellaro explains, Apple couldn't go cheap without cutting corners: (Apple) must maintain the quality of its brand, and it must allow any iPhone to be a gateway to its own services, iTunes, iCloud, iBooks, and so on. ... Cheaper speakers and audio subsystem would denigrate iTunes. Crappier display? That would only disappoint. Omit certain communication bands? Then it wouldn't work worldwide seamlessly. Cheapen the construction so that when a customer drops it from a meter height, it explodes into 20 pieces? Not good. Smaller battery? Not with LTE you don't. That's really the heart of this whole loony scene that's going down post-iPhone 5s and 5c launch. If you want Apple to produce a cheaper smartphone, you want Tim Cook to cut corners and/or sacrifice profit/margin. That's not the Apple way. A move in that direction would actually warrant the beating this "jealous" community, led by investors and the media, is giving Apple the company and AAPL stock. • [By Tyler Crowe and Aimee Duffy]

Over the past couple weeks Capstone Turbine (NASDAQ: CPST  ) shares have launched into orbit on the news that the company had secured several orders for its microturbines. But 40% in a month? On the surface, it seems a bit silly that a company could gain that much on a couple news stories about sales. For a company like Capstone, which has struggled with sales, this kind of news is exactly what shareholders were looking for.

A Speculative Biotech Catalyst Trade: ORMP

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- The recent selloff in the biotech sector hasn't left much behind. Type just about any biotech ticker into your screens and you'll likely get back an ugly chart. The bears have done damage to a hot sector that's often driven by momentum players -- which should be of no surprise to seasoned traders. Momentum cuts both ways on Wall Street. It's not just a bull's playground.

>>5 Stocks Under $10 Set to Soar

The recent pummeling of the biotech sector has some people on Wall Street claiming that the entire complex is in a bubble, and there is absolutely some truth to that. The iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology Index ETF (IBB) soared from $83.50 a share in mid-2011 to its 2014 high of $275.40 a share. That's an incredible run, and there's no doubt in my mind that the biotech sector entered the frothy stage. As we all know, on Wall Street, bulls make money, bear make money, but pigs get slaughtered.

That being said, the sector could be setting up for a tradable bounce soon, and many of the beaten-down names will rebound sharply to the upside. Remember, the smart short-sellers don't stay in the game long without taking profits -- and when they come in to cover their short positions, many of these beaten-down stocks will get squeezed higher as the bulls take back control, at least temporarily.

>>5 Big Trades to Brace for a Correction

With this in mind, it's time to start identifying some of these beaten-down biotech stocks that could be ripe for big rebounds.

One small-cap biotech stock that's been beaten down and pushed into extremely oversold territory is Israeli-based Oramed Pharmaceuticals (ORMP), a development-stage pharmaceutical company that's engaged in the research and development of pharmaceutical solutions for the use of orally ingestible capsules of pills for delivery of polypeptides. The company's product portfolio includes ORMD-0801, an oral insulin capsule that is in phase IIa clinical trials for the treatment of diabetes; and ORMD-0901, an analog for GLP-1 gastrointestinal hormone, which is in pre-clinical trials.

Oramed Pharmaceuticals has a market cap of $108 million and an enterprise value of $93 million. This company currently has $7.79 million of cash on its balance sheet and around $47,000 of debt. This is a highly speculative biotech stock that has about 11 employees, no approved product on the market and zero revenue. If you're a fundamental investor, then this stock is probably not for you. However, if you're a trader like me, then this could be the perfect stock to play in the near-term for a variety of reasons.

>>5 Stocks With Big Insider Buying

The first reason I am bringing this name to you is because Oramed Pharmaceuticals is insanely beaten-down at its current price of just above $11 a share, down 27% so far in 2014. To get the true picture of how far this stock has dropped, though, look at its chart: ORMP hit a high in January of $31.73 a share and crashed to a March 24 low of of $9.64 share. Anyone who held this stock all the way down from those highs truly knows the meaning of oversold. Yes, oversold can always get more oversold, and obviously a stock doesn't crash that badly for no reason at all. That being said, ORMP did not go down on Thursday as the market slid lower, and it's held up relatively well the last few trading sessions while the market has been in turmoil.

The second reason that Oramed Pharmaceuticals looks interesting here from a trading perspective is because this company has a major catalyst on the horizon. It will be presenting detailed results from its recently completed phase IIa FDA trial on ORMD-0801 at the 2014 Diabetes Summit taking place April 23 to April 25 in Boston. I have no idea if the results will be good, but what I can easily foresee is the stock running up into that event off its extremely oversold condition.

The third reason I like ORMP here from a trading perspective is because the stock is heavily shorted. The current short interest as a percentage of the float from ORMP is pretty high at 11.6%. According to the most recent data, ORMP has a tradable float of 7.63 million shares and 886,000 of those shares are sold short by the bears. This is the type of situation that's begging for a squeeze since we have a significant catalyst that's less than a month away.

>>Beat the S&P in 2014 With the Stocks Everyone Else Hates

The final reason I like ORMP from a trading standpoint here is because a major shareholder just bought 75,000 shares, or above $796,000 worth of stock, at $10.62 per share. This same beneficial owner, Regals Capital Management, also bought 51,000 shares, or about $800,000 worth of stock, at $14.96 per share in early February. A major holder of ORMP shares is in the market buying stock right now -- that should be enough to make any trader take notice.

All things considered, this is a situation that could produce a monster short squeeze as the catalyst for ORMP gets closer. Remember, this is a trading opportunity I am highlighting here -- nothing more and nothing less -- but it's an opportunity that I think could potentially bank big dollars if ORMP can start to trend in the right direction and soon.

From a technical perspective, this stock has started to find support right around its intraday low from its previous gap-up-day zone from last December that took the stock from $6.83 to almost $14 a share. Shares of ORMP are bouncing sideways here right above the 200-day moving average, and the stock is starting to trend within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if ORMP manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $11.80 to $12 a share and then $12.50 a share with high volume Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 734,136 shares.

Traders can look to buy ORMP off weakness as long as it's trending above its 200-day moving average at $10.25 or above its recent low of $9.64, or look to buy it off strength once it clears those breakout levels with strong volume. Keep in mind that I would want nothing to do with this stock from the long side if it broke below $9.64 with volume, since then the risk would be that ORMP could fill the gap that started at $6.83 last December.

If this stock does break out soon, then it could easily squeeze big and tag $14 to $15 a share or even $16 to $18 a share. The upper end of these targets would not be hard to hit, considering how oversold and heavily shorted ORMP is, so keep this name on your trading radar.

The war for breakfast is getting hotter than ever, with big fast-food companies such as Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM  ) , McDonald's (NYSE: MCD  ) , and Burger King (NYSE: BKW  ) intensifying their competitive pressure in that lucrative niche. On the other hand, at the higher end of the pricing spectrum, Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX  ) could be a clear winner in that competition thanks to its differentiated quality and successful menu innovations.

Fast-food companies waking up to the breakfast war
McDonald's has traditionally been a leading player in breakfast because of the popularity of products like its Egg McMuffin and other competitively priced items. But the remarkably competitive fast-food industry is becoming even more aggressive lately, and breakfast seems to be one of the hottest battlegrounds in that war.

Yum! Brands is making an aggressive move in breakfast as the company has recently rolled out its breakfast menu at Taco Bell locations on a national scale. Offerings include a waffle taco, a breakfast burrito, and a "Crunchwrap," among other food products that Taco Bell sells alongside coffee and Tropicana orange juice.

We initiated investments in Google (GOOG), as well as the advertising agencies Interpublic (IPG) and WPP (WPP). The fortunes of all three are tied directly to the level of global advertising spend, and they all saw their shares prices decline due to concerns of a recession-related slowdown. At our purchase price, we believe we were buying each at roughly 11-13x our estimated earnings for 2012 should the fears of a macroeconomic slowdown prove correct. This strikes us as a very reasonable multiple to pay for asset-light global businesses that generate strong free cash flow across the business cycle and have the capability to grow earnings greater than GDP in a normal economic environment.

Advisors' Opinion:

Fiesta Restaurant Group (FRGI) was the Fund's best performing position in the fourth quarter and for all of 2013. Over the past year the stock g ained over 240 percent and added 212 basis points of return. Fiesta Restaurant Group (FRGI) owns, operates and franchises fast-casual restaurants under the Pollo Tropical and Taco Cabana brand names. This stock closed up 10.5% to $34.73 in Friday's trading session.

    Friday's Volume: 552,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 220,525

    Volume % Change: 140%

From a technical perspective, FRGI ripped sharply higher here right off some near-term support at $30.89 and back above its 50-day moving average of $34.23 with strong upside volume. This move pushed shares of FRGI into breakout territory, since the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance at $33.14. Shares of FRGI are now starting to move within range of triggering another key breakout trade. That trade will hit if FRGI manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance at $35.73 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in FRGI as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $34.23 or above $33 and then once it sustains a move or close above $35.75 with volume that hits near or above 220,525 shares. If that bre! akout hit! s soon, then FRGI will set up to re-test or possibly take out its all-time high at $38.84. Any high-volume move above that level will then give FRGI a chance to trend north of $40.

10 Best Paper Stocks To Invest In 2014

No good deed goes unpunished.

The British newspaper The Guardian deserves the highest of accolades for the powerful journalism it has published based on documents leaked by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.

The Washington Post and New York Times have also broken Snowden-fueled scoops. But The Guardian has led the way.

The result has been a much-needed debate in the United States as well as Great Britain of rampant government surveillance of private citizens with absolutely no connection to terrorism.

RIEDER: Turning point in government spying saga

The hostility exhibited by some members of the committee was astonishing. One asked Rusbridger whether he loved his country. (A somewhat taken aback Rusbridger said he did.) Another asked if he would have passed secrets on to the Nazis. A third suggested The Guardianmay have broken the law by sharing some Snowden information with The New York Times.

One of the most famous scenes in the cult classic, the Graduate, was when Mr. McGuiretook Dustin Hoffman character aside and said"Ben, I want to say one word to you, just one word: Plastics"; but what about the Berry Plastics Group Inc (NYSE: BERY) and its performance verses that of theiShares S&P 500 Index ETF (NYSEARCA: IVV), iShares Russell Midcap Index Fund ETF (NYSEARCA: IWR) and iShares S&P SmallCap 600 Index ETF (NYSEARCA: IJR)? I should mention that plastics and the Berry Plastics Group was not the place to be yesterday as the stock took a tumble on reduced guidance.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

It's certainly not as big as Berry Plastics Group Inc. (NYSE:BERY). It's not even as big as Tredegar Corporation (NYSE:TG). There's one big way AEP Industries (NASDAQ:AEPI) can certainly compete head-on with BERY and TG right now, however... as an investment opportunity. Thanks to the bullish bump AEPI gave us last week, a long-standing selloff has been revered, and there's a whole lot of ground to make up.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

You can find many examples of this phenomenon recently:

Late last month, Pitney Bowes (NYSE: PBI  ) cut its dividend in half after announcing worse-than-expected sales and income. The stock had suffered from weakness in Pitney Bowes' core mailing and enterprise business solutions segments, and the company chose to sacrifice its former double-digit yield in order to shore up its financial condition. Even after the cut, the stock still yields a fairly high 5%. In February, CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL  ) cut its dividend by about 25%, again after reporting weak guidance for its earnings for the remainder of 2013. Even though the rural telecom company chose simply to put cash previously earmarked to pay its former yield of 7% toward share buybacks instead, the stock plunged more than 20% in response to the move, although it has rebounded significantly since then as investors recognized the fundamental benefits to the company from the capital reallocation. Until three months ago, Cliffs Natural Resources (NYSE: CLF  ) had a high dividend yield approaching 7% despite terrible conditions in its iron-ore and metallurgical-coal businesses. After announcing earnings in mid-February, the company cut its dividend by more than three-quarters in a move that will conserve cash for the ailing producer of raw materials for steel production. Now, the stock yields just 2.6%.

That's not to say that all of the highest dividend paying stocks are doomed to reduce their payouts. Businesses that are designed to focus on maximizing cash flow rather than seeking growth can often sustain very high yields for years. Vanguard High Dividend Yield (NYSEMKT: VYM  ) and other dividend ETFs use a combination of factors beyond simple yield to choose stocks with sustainable high payouts.

In the face of such enthusiastic selling by those running the company, it is tough to make a case for buying or holding CY stock.

    CenturyLink (CTL)

At first glance, shares of CenturyLink (CTL) look almost attractive. The stock is trading at just 12 times earnings right now and sports a monster dividend yield of 6.9%.

10 Best Paper Stocks To Invest In 2014: Cornerstone Progressive Return Fund(CFP)

Cornerstone Progressive Return Fund is a closed-ended equity fund of fund launched and managed by Cornerstone Advisors, Inc. The fund invests funds investing in the public equity markets of the United States. It invests in stocks of companies operating across diversified sectors. Cornerstone Progressive Return Fund was formed on April 26, 2007 and is domiciled in the United States.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

But you can see in several places the consequences of the stampede toward high yield. Here are just a few:

Closed-end funds Cornerstone Progressive (NYSEMKT: CFP  ) and Pimco High Income (NYSE: PHK  ) both make fixed payments back to fund shareholders on a monthly basis, and their distribution yields are truly extraordinary, at about 17% and 12%, respectively. Those dividends have enticed shareholders to pay $1.30 to $1.40 or more for each $1 of assets in the funds. Yet during most months, a substantial portion of those distribution payments has simply been a return of investor capital rather than true income from the funds' investments. A recent study discussed in The Wall Street Journal found that returns on a portfolio with a combined value and dividend-income strategy outperformed a strategy focused more exclusively on maximizing dividends by an average of 1.7 percentage points per year, a huge edge in long-run returns. In the dividend ETF arena, most funds tend to focus on maximizing yield. Although the popular Vanguard Dividend Appreciation (NYSEMKT: VIG  ) ETF bucks the trend by screening first for consistent dividend growth and only then looking at yield as a factor, many rival ETFs start with high-yielding stocks as their baseline and only then consider other desirable traits. Others focus solely on high-dividend niches of the market, such as iShares FTSE NAREIT Mortgage-Plus (NYSEMKT: REM  ) and its concentration on high-yield mortgage REITs.

When dividend stocks get too popular, their prices get out of line with both their dividend income and the fundamentals of the businesses that underlie those stocks. In simpler terms, when dividend stocks become bad values, it's time to consider looking elsewhere for a margin of safety.

Shutdown hits preschoolers, parents

Head Start at risk in shutdown   Head Start at risk in shutdown NEW YORK (CNNMoney) The government shutdown could cost Melanie Rhodes her job.

After nearly a year of unemployment, Rhodes finally landed a job as a school bus driver in Bridgeport, Conn. But now that the shutdown has closed her child's preschool, she may have to give that job up.

"It took me a long time to find a job," said Rhodes, who was also homeless for a time before having her son almost four years ago. "But if the government shutdown continues, I'm going to have to stay home again."

Rhodes' son Malachi is one of nearly a million children nationwide who attend Head Start -- the federally funded preschool program designed to give children from poor families early access to education, nutrition and health care.

As of Thursday, over 5,000 kids under the age of five in 11 states have been shut out of their preschools -- victims of the political impasse that left the schools unfunded. All told, there are nearly 19,000 students in schools set to receive funding in October, according to Sally Aman, a spokeswoman for the National Head Start Association.

This is bad for the kids, and also for the parents who must now scramble to find childcare, or risk losing their jobs.

"What these parents aren't able to do is go to work, go to school," said Aman. "It's really a devastating ripple effect."

That includes parents like Ashely Rodriguez.

Top Regional Bank Stocks For 2015

A single mother of three, Rodriguez recently left a domestic violence shelter and is currently living in transitional housing for single mothers.

She enrolled in a three-year educational training program to get a new start in life, and said Head Start gives her the freedom to attend school during the day.

But the program her children attend in Brooksville, Florida will run out money Friday.

"I'm on cash assistance, I'm going to have to put them in daycare and that's going to be all my cash assistance gone," she told CNN, on the verge of tears. "I only get that once a month."

Her children receive three meals a day during the week and a weekend backpack filled with food from Head Start. She said It will be difficult fo! r her family once the program closes.

"We're the ones that are going to suffer, our children are going to be the ones that are going to be without food, without education," she said.

Rhodes, whose son is autistic, had strong words for Washington.

"Think about us, think about the single parents that need daycare -- they could lose their jobs," she said. "We really need them to get it together."

Among a few stocks that had negative returns in the quarter, Veeco Instruments (VECO) and Titan International (TWI) are also among the smaller positions in the portfolio. Titan, which declined 11.4% in the quarter and will be discussed later in this letter, is a relatively new stock in the portfolio and one that we added to as the share price declined.Among the stocks that we added to in the quarter were Atwood Oceanics (ATW) and Titan International (TWI).As mentioned above, Titan declined nearly 12% in the quarter and we added to the position as the stock weakened. As you may recall, we initiated the position in TWI in the fourth quarter of 2013 in the mid- teens. Despite our additional TWI purchases, we do not yet own a full position in the stock. However, we have plenty of capacity to take the stock to a normal full position, which is 3%, but this assumes the company earns the right to have more of your capital allocated to the position. The primary reason why TWI shares sold off recently is that the wheel and tire markets for large construction and mining equipment remain depressed. Investors had hoped that the off-road, large construction equipment and mining business would see some acceleration after the very cold winter season, but that does not appear to be the case. Tire inventory levels for large, off-road equipment were too high for dealers to be aggressive and purchase tires en masse earlier this year. However, there is some recent evidence that much of the excess tire inventory has been reduced to levels that now support some restocking. Our investment thesis for TWI is not predicated on the wheel and tire market for large, off-road equipment to come roaring back to levels experienced before the financial crisis. Rather we believe the assets TWI has accumulated over the past decade can be managed more efficiently and, therefore, profit margins can improve without a huge increase in revenues.
