Top 5 Information Technology Stocks To Watch Right Now

Any time the federal government enacts major legislation, there are inevitable winners and losers in the corporate world. That's certainly the case with major laws passed during the first four and a half years of President Obama's time in office.

The first big piece of legislation the Obama administration passed was the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, or ARRA. Signed into law in 2009, ARRA spent around $800 billion with the goal to stimulate the economy. The other major victory for the administration was passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, or PPACA, commonly referred to as Obamacare. While these bills created varied effects -- good and bad -- for different industries, a few companies emerged as big winners from both ARRA and PPACA.

High fives for HITECH
ARRA spread that $800 billion or so around in lots of different ways. One important part of the legislation was the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act, or HITECH. The feds allocated almost $26 billion with HITECH to foster the adoption of health information technology by health-care providers, especially hospitals and physicians.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

Then there is that lucky or unlucky outcome of price hikes. The public will pay more for stamps, making you and me the losers in this. The question to ask is whether or not Stamps.com Inc. (NASDAQ: STMP) just get a built-in revenue booster per customer on a static basis?

  • [By Brian Pacampara]

What: Shares of online postage provider Stamps.com (NASDAQ: STMP  ) surged 24% today after its quarterly results and guidance.

So what: The stock has slumped a bit in 2013 on concerns over slowing growth, but today's first-quarter results -- adjusted EPS spiked 38% on a 13.5% revenue increase -- and upbeat full-year guidance naturally eases some of those worries. In fact, Stamps.com hit its highest level of total paid customers -- and added its largest number of new paid customers -- during the quarter, giving investors plenty of good vibes about the company's prospects going forward.

  • [By Michael Lewis]

While the United States Postal Service may be limping toward extinction, postage itself is far from a dying business. Web-based Stamps.com (NASDAQ: STMP  ) had worried investors and analysts for some time that demand would soften along with the USPS decline, but it's done nearly the opposite. In its most recent quarter, Stamps.com broke company records and showed strong promise in the future. The announcement delighted investors, sending the stock up more than 13% immediately following. But with a relatively rich valuation, the company may only be a buy for opportunistic, growth-happy investors. Here's what you need to know.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

By almost any measure, Stamps.com Inc. (NASDAQ:STMP) is a solid investment. Revenue and profits are on the rise, and are projected to grow again in 2014. Stamps.com has also developed a penchant for earnings beats. And, at a trailing P/E of 18.3 and a forward-looking P/E ratio of 15.7, it's not like STMP shares cost a relative fortune. Yet, STMP is starting to look like a major liability where it could hurt shareholders the most... on the chart.

Hot US Companies To Invest In Right Now

Lori Shepler/AP A financial windfall will accompany LeBron James when he returns to northeastern Ohio. Following the NBA superstar's decision over the weekend to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Cuyahoga County officials estimated that the local economy will benefit to the tune of roughly $500 million a year. A little more than half of that windfall will come from the games themselves as ticket sales spike with fans willing to pay more -- and more often -- to see James play near his hometown of Akron. The balance will come from tourism and the exposure that comes from TV coverage that will gravitate to Cavaliers home games. Some experts, though. caution that the real revenue will be far less. However, an unlikely winner from James' move may be of the country's largest amusement park operators. Please Secure All Loose Belongings Just 62 miles separate the Cavs' arena and Cedar Fair's (FUN) Cedar Point amusement park, on a scenic peninsula in Sandusky. Last Wednesday -- two days before James made his big announcement that he would leave the Miami Heat after four seasons -- Cedar Point made an interesting Twitter post: "Hey @KingJames - come back to the @cavs and we'll rename one of our coasters, 'King James!' Ball in your court, sir. RT, #Ohio!" It wasn't just talk. Shortly after James announced his decision to return home, Cedar Point promised to live up to its earlier promise: "It's been fun to watch the excitement surrounding the return of @KingJames to Cleveland. We stand ready to honor our original tweet." James has been to the park a couple of times, and there's a YouTube video of him being heckled there while taking in a game of hoops -- naturally, after he had left Cleveland for Miami. However, the initially radical thought of renaming a coaster King James now sounds like a winning move with the game's best basketball player coming back home as a prodigal son. That should be good news for Cedar Point and possibly even better news for Cedar Fair. Coasters Have Their Ups and Downs Cedar Point may be best known for its array of scream machines, but Cedar Fair is best known by its investors for its juicy dividend -- a healthy 5.7 percent.

Alamy DETROIT -- Graco is recalling nearly 3.8 million car safety seats because children can get trapped by buckles that may not unlatch. But the company has drawn the ire of federal safety regulators who say the recall should include another 1.8 million rear-facing car seats designed for infants. The recall covers 11 models made from 2009 through 2013 by Graco Children's Products of Atlanta, a unit of Newell Rubbermaid (NWL). It's the fourth-largest child seat recall in U.S. history, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the government's road safety watchdog. The agency warned that the problem could make it "difficult to remove the child from the restraint, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a vehicle crash, fire or other emergency." NHTSA also criticized Graco in a sternly-worded letter dated Tuesday, saying the recall excludes seven infant car seat models with the same buckles. Both the company and NHTSA have received complaints about stuck buckles on the infant seats, the agency said. "Some of these consumers have had no choice but to resort to the extreme measure of cutting the harness straps to remove their child from the car seat," the NHTSA letter said. The agency wants Graco to identify the total number of seats that potentially have the defect and explain why it excluded the infant seats. NHTSA, which began investigating the seats in October of 2012, said the investigation remains open. The agency said it could hold a public hearing and require Graco to add the infant seats. Graco, a division of Atlanta-based Newell Rubbermaid, told The Associated Press that its tests found that food or beverages can make the harness buckles in the children's seats sticky and harder to use over time. Rear-facing infant seats aren't being recalled because infants don't get food or drinks on their seats, Graco spokeswoman Ashley Mowrey said. But Mowrey said Graco will send replacement buckles to owners of infant seats upon re

Someone's head had to roll. Just weeks ago, Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS  ) finally gave up its ambitions in the tablet market. The surrender came amid slow unit sales for its Nook device and the Nook segment, which includes content sales, saw revenue fall by 34%. B&N ate an inventory charge of $133 million related to the heavy discounting it did to get units moving, and the company said that it was changing its strategic plans as a result of the indigestion.

After nearly three years, Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS  ) has had enough of its money-losing foray into tablets.

  • [By Evan Niu, CFA]

Rival bookseller Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS  ) finally just gave up on tablet hardware, announcing that it would no longer manufacture devices and was hoping to transition to a co-branded strategy. As part of B&N's last-ditch effort to clear out its remaining inventory, the company had already extended discounts on its newest Nook tablets. A comparable 7-inch Nook HD with 16 GB of storage costs $149, and Amazon needed to close that gap somewhat.

5 Stocks Spiking on Big Volume for Your Trading Radar

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- Professional traders running mutual funds and hedge funds don't just look at a stock's price moves; they also track big changes in volume activity. Often when above-average volume moves into an equity, it precedes a large spike in volatility.

Must Read: 5 Stocks to Trade for Big Breakout Gains

Major moves in volume can signal unusual activity, such as insider buying or selling -- or buying or selling by "superinvestors."

Unusual volume can also be a major signal that hedge funds and momentum traders are piling into a stock ahead of a catalyst. These types of traders like to get in well before a large spike, so it's always a smart move to monitor unusual volume. That said, remember to combine trend and price action with unusual volume. Put them all together to help you decipher the next big trend for any stock.

With that in mind, let's take a look at several stocks rising on unusual volume recently.

Top 5 Recreation Companies To Watch For 2015

Top 5 Recreation Companies To Watch For 2015: IMAX Corp (IMAX)

IMAX Corporation, incorporated on January 1, 2002, together with its wholly owned subsidiaries, is an entertainment technology companies, specializing in motion picture technologies and presentations. The Company's customers who purchase lease or otherwise acquire the IMAX theatre systems are theatre exhibitors, which operate commercial theatres, museums, science centers, and destination entertainment sites. IMAX theatre systems combine the Company's digital re-mastering movie conversion technology (IMAX DMR), projectors with equipment and automated theatre control systems, sound system components, screens, theatre geometry, and theatre acoustics.

The Company's principal business is the design, manufacture and delivery of theater systems (IMAX theater systems). The Company's customers who purchase, lease or otherwise acquire the IMAX theater systems through joint revenue sharing arrangements are theater exhibitors that operate commercial theaters (part icularly multiplexes), museums, science centers, or destination entertainment sites. The Company does not own IMAX theaters, but licenses the use of its trademarks along with the sale, lease or contribution of the IMAX theater system.

IMAX Systems, Theater System Maintenance and Joint Revenue Sharing Arrangements

The Company provides IMAX theater systems to customers on a sales or long-term lease basis with an initial 10-year term. These agreements consist of initial fees and ongoing fees (which can include a fixed minimum amount per annum and contingent fees in excess of the minimum payments) and maintenance and extended warranty fees. The initial fees vary depending on the system configuration and location of the theater and generally are paid to the Company in installments between the time of system signing and the time of system installati! on. Ongoing fees are paid over the term of the contract, commencing after the theater system has been instal led and are generally equal to the greater of a fixed minimu! m amount per annum or a percentage of boxoffice receipts. The Company also provides IMAX theater systems to customers under joint revenue sharing arrangements, pursuant to which the Company provides the IMAX theater system in return for a portion of the customer's IMAX box-office receipts, and in some cases concession revenues and/or a small upfront or initial payment. As at December 31, 2012, the Company had 316 theaters in operation under joint revenue sharing arrangements.

Production and Digital Re-Mastering (IMAX DMR)

The Company's technology digitally re-masters Hollywood films into IMAX digital cinema package format or 15/70-format film. IMAX DMR digitally enhances the image resolution of motion picture films for projection on IMAX screens while maintaining or enhancing the visual clarity and sound quality to levels for which The IMAX Experience is known. This technology enabled the IMAX theater network to release Hollywood films simultane ously with domestic release. In a typical IMAX DMR film arrangement, the Company will receive a percentage of net box-office receipts of any commercial films released in the IMAX network, which is generally 10-15%, from a film studio for the conversion of the film to the IMAX DMR format and access to its distribution platform. During the year ended December 31, 2012, 35 films converted through the IMAX DMR process were released to theaters within the IMAX network. As of December 31, 2012, the Company released 23 IMAX DMR titles to theaters within the IMAX network. During 2012, five local language IMAX DMR films were released, including one French film, Houba! On the Trail of the Marsupilami: The IMAX Experience and four Chinese IMAX DMR titles: Tai Chi 0: An IMAX 3D Experience, Tai Chi Hero: An IMAX 3D Experience, Back to 1942: The IMAX Experience and CZ12: The ! IMAX Expe! rience.

Film Distribution and Post-Production

The Company is also a distributor of large-format films, primarily catering to its institution! al theate! r partners. The Company generally distributes films, which it produces or for which it has acquired distribution rights from independent producers. The Company generally receives a percentage of the theater box-office receipts as a distribution fee. Films produced by the Company are typically financed through third parties, whereby the Company will generally receive a film production fee in exchange for producing the film and a distribution fee for distributing the film. The Company utilizes third-party funding for the majority of original films it produces and distributes. In 2012, the Company, along with Warner Bros. Pictures (WB) and MacGillivray Freeman Films (MFF) released an original title, To the Artic 3D: An IMAX 3D Experience.

The Company derives a small portion of its revenues from other sources. As of December 31, 2012, the Company had four owned and operated theaters. In addition, the Company has a commercial arrangement with one theater resulting i n the sharing of profits and losses and provides management services to two theaters. The Company also rents its two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) large-format film and digital cameras to third party production companies. The Company maintains cameras and other film equipment and also offers production advice and technical assistance to both documentary and Hollywood filmmakers. Additionally, the Company generates revenues from the sale of after-market parts and 3D glasses. As of December 31, 2012, approximately 54.2% of IMAX systems in operation were located in the United States and Canada. As at December 31, 2012, approximately 45.8% of IMAX systems in operation were located within international markets (other than the United States and Canada).

Frederic J. Brown, AFP/Getty Images Moviegoers aren't heading out the multiplex the way they used to, but that doesn't mean that Hollywood is toast. AMC Entertainment (AMC) reported quarterly results Tuesday. The nation's leading exhibitor -- 345 theaters with 4,976 screens -- went public two months ago. The headline numbers are positive. Revenue increased a better than expected 2.3 percent to $713 million. Profitability also expanded nicely. ! However,! revenue increased as a result of a 5.5 percent increase in ticket prices and a 3.7 percent uptick in concessions purchased by patrons. Obviously you don't see those kind of gains against a mere 2.3 percent lift in revenue without dealing with more empty seats, and that's just what happened. There was a 3.2 percent decline in attendance. AMC's ticket takers welcomed 50.4 million guests during the holiday quarter, well below the 52.1 million guests that it entertained a year earlier. That's bad, and what makes things worse is that it had fewer theaters -- from continuing operations -- a year earlier. It wouldn't be wise to hold out for a Hollywood ending. Customers Want Bigger and Better Things Apologists will argue that it wasn't a bumper crop of movies hitting theaters, but that's not accurate at all. Last year's biggest box office winner -- "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" -- opened in November. Disney's "Frozen" also opened ahead of the holidays, and it's the family entertainment giant's biggest non-Pixar earner since 1994's "The Lion King." Moviegoers still come out for the big movies, and they're also willing to pay more for a premium setting. IMAX (IMAX) reported blowout quarterly results a few days earlier. IMAX screens rang up a record $244 million in ticket sales worldwide. IMAX is also closing out the year with a record backlog of 384 commercial theaters to deploy. Top 5 Safest Stocks To Invest In Right Now

While we are approaching the end of another calendar year, there are still some memories of 2012. The biggest fear in 2012 was: the world is coming to an end on 21st December, 2012. Well, it is more than a year – and the world has yet not ended.

At the same time, one may wonder if the world has changed dramatically. Let us look at some of the events that took place in 2013. These events shook our long-held beliefs.

In the beginning of the year, the safest asset – gold, after having a decade long bull run, saw weakness. What happened in April was unbelievable for most – In a sudden move, gold prices (in Indian Rupees) were down more than 20 percent from their peak. Barring a surge in July-August due to the weakness of Indian Rupee against world currencies, Gold has been quite lackluster throughout the year. Before the year began, it was believed to be a safe haven.

Why Netflix Stock Is Cheaper Than It Looks

Netflix Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX) stock is a bargain right now, though it may not look like one.

That's why investors have been selling Netflix stock over the past week, knocking shares down from an all-time high of $489.29 hit on Sept. 9 to the $450 range today (Tuesday).

It's easy to see why many people think Netflix stock is overheating.

Top Net Payout Yield Companies To Invest In Right Now

Add in the general jitters about a possible stock market correction, and it's no wonder Netflix stock has slipped from its highs.

These are all legitimate concerns, but they are all trumped by the Los Gatos, Calif.-based company's extraordinary potential.

Let's start by looking at Netflix' performance in its most recent quarter.

Profits were up an impressive 141% from the same period a year earlier, and revenue was up 25.3%.

Meanwhile, the company continued to grow its customer base, reaching the 50 million subscriber milestone.

And most importantly, NFLX continues to take steps to ensure those positive trends keep moving in the right direction - like the bullish news it delivered just yesterday...

European Expansion a Key Driver for Netflix Stock

On Monday Netflix announced it will expand into six European countries, including France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Belgium, over the next year.

"This is the biggest international launch we've ever done. It represents nearly 80 million broadband households and about 200 million people," Netflix Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings told the Financial Times.

That's a lot of potential new customers. Research firm IHS Technology estimates that the addition of the six new European countries alone will result in 5 million to 6 million new Netflix subscribers by 2018.

Now, critics point out that the ongoing international expansion is costly. In fact, the international division of Netflix has been showing a loss.

But this rate of investment will slow over time, which will turn those losses into gains that will be accelerated by the growth in the subscriber base, which is expected to reach about 45.8 million by 2018.
Netflix stock
"International subscriber growth is the most important variable driving stock performance for the foreseeable future," Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne said in a research note.

And those numbers don't count an eventual expansion into Asia, although Hastings has said the company views such nations as Korea and Japan as "great opportunities."

Meanwhile, Netflix expects its U.S. subscriber base to grow from about 36 million now to 54 million by 2018.

That means Netflix will roughly double its subscribers by 2018 to 100 million. And with investment costs declining over that period, earnings per share will more than double.

"We continue to believe that Netflix has achieved a level of sustainable scale, growth and profitability that isn't currently factored into its stock price," RBC Capital markets analyst Mark Mahaney told Investor's Business Daily.

Plus, as Netflix's international footprint grows, it will have more leverage in striking global licensing deals for content, which will also help the bottom line.

As the Netflix business model accelerates earnings over the next few years, the NFLX stock price will follow.

But even if projections fall short, there's another wild card that could make Netflix stock a big winner...

NFLX Is an Alluring Takeover Target

Netflix has succeeded in building a business that has long tempted most of the major tech companies, including Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL), Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG, GOOGL), Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT), and Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN).

Any one of those companies could view a Netflix acquisition as a quick way to gain a dominant position in the streaming content market and could be part of a bigger strategy to disrupt the television industry.

True, Netflix would not come cheap, as it has a current valuation of about $27.5 billion. But each of these four suitors could afford to buy Netflix - all but Amazon have more than enough cash sitting on their balance sheets.

There haven't been any rumors that any of the four are considering a Netflix acquisition, but there has been plenty of speculation over the past couple of years about why it would make sense. It's even possible that one of those major players could make a preemptive move to stop a rival from getting its hands on Netflix.

Even the hint of a major acquisition would make Netflix stock soar. And while it remains a remote possibility, it's one more reason that NFLX stock doesn't really look all that expensive right now.

For investors looking for exposure to the US commonwealth of Puerto Rico, banking stocks Doral Financial Corp (NYSE: DRL), First Bancorp (NYSE: FBP), OFG Bancorp (NYSE: OFG) and Popular Inc (NASDAQ: BPOP) offer the best bet as these Puerto Rico stocks trade on major US exchanges rather than the OTC. However, it should be mentioned that there has been a slowdown in Puerto Rico's economy which has also shrunk in five of the past seven fiscal years. Then last February, Puerto Rico's debt was cut to speculative grade by the three largest credit-rating companies while Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla has proposed a series of budget cuts to help tackle the island's mounting debt load -including the freezing public workers' salaries and the closing about 100 schools.

Top 5 High Tech Companies To Buy For 2014

Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ  ) shares soared sky-high on Thursday thanks to a surprisingly solid second-quarter report. On Friday, HP threw its engines into reverse. The strongest Dow Jones (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) component one day became the weakest of the next day.

Fellow Fool Dan Caplinger posits that HP's 2.5% drop is nothing but a pullback after Thursday's 17% dose of enthusiasm. That's certainly part of the picture, but I think there's more to this steep reversal.

I'm not convinced that HP's recent success is sustainable, and HP investors are slowly waking up to this uncomfortable idea. It's not a bucket of ice water to the face, but rather more of a sluggish, queasy morning after the earnings-induced party.

CEO Meg Whitman remains committed to HP's current strategy. This means keeping the company intact, rather than splitting it into two nimbler companies, while firing diluted blunderbuss shots at every market in sight. Separating into a consumer company and a business-class company would help each division double down on the opportunities that truly matter while dropping unprofitable lead weights as appropriate.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

It's been a solid year for Thompson Reuters (TRI); since the calendar flipped over to January, this $30 billion financial media firm has rallied more than 22%. But don't worry if you've missed out on the move -- TRI looks well-positioned for higher levels thanks to the pattern that's been setting up in shares.

Thompson Reuters is currently forming an ascending triangle pattern, a bullish setup that's formed by horizontal resistance above shares at the $35.50 level and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as TRI bounces in between those two technically-important price levels, it's getting squeezed closer and closer to a confirmed breakout above that $35.50 price level. When the breakout happens, it's time to be a buyer.

TRI closed above the $35.50 level in yesterday's session, but it's a little early to call it a breakout just yet. If shares can hold above that breakout level all through today's session, then the buy signal is worth heeding.
