Best US Companies To Own For 2014

The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits slipped 21,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 323,000, in a sign the labor market continues to improve as businesses see little need to cut jobs.

That's the lowest level of weekly unemployment benefit applications since late September. Analysts were expecting jobless claims to fall to 335,000.

The Labor Department said Thursday that the less volatile four-week average fell 6,750 to 338,500. The four-week average has dropped for the third straight week. Both figures are near pre-recession levels.

Applications had spiked in early October because of the partial government shutdown and processing backlogs in California. But jobless claims have now fallen in five of the past six weeks.

The steady declines are the latest sign that companies are firing fewer workers and suggest hiring will continue to pick up.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Divine]

While losers outnumbered gainers by a 2-to-1 margin in the stock market today, some stocks felt the pain more harshly than others. Avon Products (NYSE: AVP  ) and the two stocks below are such examples. Shares of the beauty products company lost 2.8% Monday, perhaps because investors realize the significant challenges Avon still faces. The entire business model depends on the size and capability of Avon's sales representatives, and last year their fleet size fell by 15%. With North American sales halved since 2007, sales still falling in the most recent quarter, and a net loss in the fourth quarter, things don't look great right now. Thankfully, Avon is popular with the Hispanic community, which should be a boon to its revenue as U.S. demographics change over time.

Best Growth Companies To Watch In Right Now

A recent report by Juniper Research has added more fuel to the wearable technology fire, noting that the next few years could bring lots of growth to the new industry. Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) has essentially already entered the market with Glass, as has Samsung with the Galaxy Gear, and many expect Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) to enter the space next year. With big players already entering the market, the question isn't whether tech companies will pursue wearables, but rather which ones are in the best position to benefit.

The next four years could be huge
The report from Juniper says that by 2018 the smart wearable device industry will have retail revenues of $19 billion -- compared to just $1.4 billion this year. That massive growth is expected to come from the high price points of wearable devices and strong demand from users.

As far as pricing goes, Samsung is selling its Galaxy Gear smart watch starting at $299. Back in August, an analyst at CIMB Securities said that he expects Apple to launch its rumored iWatch in the second half of 2014, and ship as many as 63.4 million in the first year at the price of $199. Google is currently selling its Glass device mainly to developers for $1,500, but that price will likely be significantly lower when it hits the mass market. An analyst at IHS recently told The New York Times that the price will be around the same as a tablet or smartphone.

Small cap Checkpoint Systems, Inc (NYSE: CKP) fights shoplifting or retail theft and other forms of"shrinkthat costs retailers over $112 billion worldwide last year (according to a study funded by the company), meaning it might be an interesting stock to take a closer look at and to compare its performance with that of SPDR S&P Retail ETF (NYSEARCA: XRT) and PowerShares Dynamic Retail ETF (NYSEARCA: PMR). Just how bad can shoplifting or shrink be for a retailer? Troubled retailer J.C. Moreover and given that tens of millions of Americans are now facing higher health insurance costs thanks to Obamacare (which will likely impact consumer discretionary spending),retailerswill need to find ways to shore up their margins and bottom lines by preventingretail theft with solutions from company like Checkpoint Systems.

Hot Consumer Stocks To Own Right Now

Retailers are increasingly worried about the holiday spending season. And so is Wall Street.

But investors whether theye been naughty or nice can reap profits in the retail sector even if holiday spending is sluggish.

Wall Street is once again clueless when it comes to gauging the spending of American consumers. During the Great Recession they missed the birth of a new spending pattern I call it he New Frugaland they are about to do it again.

This new spending pattern means Americans, whether spending less, moreor the same as last year, are diverting theirspending to buy fewer items of higher quality for the gift season. Theyl buy quality brands and items from Apple (AAPL), Coach (COH), Ralph Lauren (RL) and Williams Sonoma (WSM). These retailers will benefit.

There is too much money to be made when cognitive dissonance on Wall Street creates opportunities for those who invest literally and shop with their eyes open.

As noted previously, I rode the elevator up and then back down on Camtek (CAMT), a tiny Israeli automated optical inspection (AOI) company. By late 2008 the company had fallen to below $1 per share. Both of Camtek larger rivals, RTEC and ORBK, had dropped to absurdly low levels by November 2008. I used the opportunity to switch out of CAMT and some of my other losing propositions in favor of these superior companies. In the process, I created a large amount of tax loss carry-forwards which would allow me to minimize my future taxation when I decided to sell these cyclical entities.

  • [By John Emerson]

Camtek was an automated optical inspection (AOI) company that designed and manufactured inspection systems for printed circuit boards (PCB). Further, they were in the process of designing systems to inspect semiconductors as well. The logic for investing in AOI companies was simple: Many circuit boards still employed visual inspection and circuits were getting smaller every year.

I took a close look at all of the companies that appeared in the first part of this series, and there were some great companies in the mix. If price were no object, I'd be a huge fan of:

Oceaneering (NYSE: OII), which is prospering form the ongoing trends toward undersea naval warfare and undersea oil drilling. Oceaneering is poised to grow at a sustained double-digit pace, which is something few other defense contractors can say. Cree (Nasdaq: CREE): LED lighting is a revolutionary game-changer, and Cree's heavy emphasis on R&D is leading the charge towards ever-lower prices for these low-energy light sources that also have remarkable longevity compared to regular bulbs. Still, profit margin gains may be tough in a very competitive environment.  Polaris Industries (NYSE: PII): If Winnebago's (NYSE: WGO) recreational vehicles are suitable for retirees, Polaris has become the go-to name for activity-oriented vehicles. Notably, it has a revenue base that is four times larger than Winnebago as well. If S&P wants to position for future demographic trends, then Polaris is a great choice.

I love these companies, but I don't love their stock prices, and I'd prefer to wait for some sort of pullback before singing their praises. That said, there are two investment ideas that hold great appeal on their own. If they get added to the S&P 500, then they are also set up for a timely trade.

Click the stock to track shares of

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) The most expensive stock in the S&P 500 just got even pricier. Shares of soared again Monday, rising to an all-time high above $1,100.

In September, Priceline (PCLN, Fortune 500) became the first S&P 500 company to hit a four-digit price. Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) became the second to achieve the milestone last month. But Google is about 10% below Priceline newest peak of $1,109.50.

Though Priceline is up nearly 80% so far this year, analysts remain bullish. The average price target on Wall Street stands above $1,200 per share, up another 10% from current levels.

While Priceline shares are not cheap, they're not terribly overvalued either for being the leader in online travel. Shares are trading around 21 times 2014 earnings estimates. That makes it more expensive than rival Expedia (EXPE), but the stock is trading at a discount compared to Orbitz (OWW) and TripAdvisor (TRIP).

And the Bloomberg/Peabody effect is interesting because it is just one analyst's report, although apparently a smart and well-respected one. But Peabody is still just one analyst, and his effect on Citi's stock performance is telling: Five years on from the financial crisis, it still doesn't take much to send certain bank stocks into a tizzy. Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) is the other, even more obvious example. Investors are still unsure whether or not banks like B of A and Citi are fully back on their feet.

Booming, apparently. You know, were it just Uranium Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ:URRE) or just Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT:URG) or just Uranerz Energy Corp. (NYSEMKT:URZ) making a decided bullish move, I might be able to dismiss it. Similarly, if URZ had only been moving higher for one or two days (or only URG or only URRE), it might be easy to not be impressed. Neither of those situations has been the actual case, however. All three stocks have been moving upward for several days now, quite a bit, on noticeably higher volume. There's something "going on", as it were, and if prior group-wide movements are any clue, it's the kind of move worth tapping into.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Compass Minerals (CMP) is a producer of minerals, including salt, sulfate of potash specialty fertilizer and magnesium chloride. This stock closed up 3.4% at $75.60 in Wednesday's trading session.

    Wednesday's Volume: 913,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 212,481

    Volume % Change: 315%

From a technical perspective, CMP gapped higher here off its recent low of $64.24 with heavy upside volume. This stock recently gapped down sharply from around $90 to $64.24 with heavy downside volume. That move pushed shares of CMP into extremely oversold territory, since the stock's current relative strength index reading is 25.78. Oversold can always get more oversold, but it's also an area where a stock can experience a powerful bounce higher from. Shares of CMP are now starting to move within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if CMP manages to take out its gap down day high of $78.20 and then once it clears its 200-day moving average at $79.14 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in CMP as long as it's trending above Wednesday's low of $73.07 or $72.50 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 212,481 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then CMP will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone that started near $90.

10 Best Managed Healthcare Stocks To Buy For 2014

Today’s been a lousy day for Cliffs Natural Resources (CLF).

It’s shares have dropped 4.7% to $17.78 at 2:31 p.m. today, joining a selloff that has causedRio Tinto(RIO) to fall 2.4% to $52.11, BHP Billiton (BHP) to decline 2.8% to $64.82 and Vale (VALE) to drop 3.2% to $12.62.

The reason: China’s export data was tres terrible and commodity prices have dropped across the board–especially iron ore. And the one thing Cliffs Natural resources can’t afford is lower prices for iron ore.

Axiom Capital’s Gordon Johnson and James Bardowski explain why:

In summary, given our view on 2014 iron ore prices, we believe [Cliffs Natural Resources] will likely blow through its debt covenants in 2014, further cut its dividend, and likely need to do a very large dilutive equity deal (if the company is not able to execute these options, we see acute liquidity risk in the offing). While we recognize [Cliffs Natural Resources] has recently replaced its senior management team (CEO/Chairman & CFO), providing a new, more risk-averse approach to allocating capital, given our view on iron ore prices (anchored by what we see as structurally slower growth in China), we view the issues plaguing the company currently as structural. While we see a turnaround as possible, $114 iron ore suggests bankruptcy is a growing reality, inspiring our report title iving On A Prayer

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Levisohn]

2Q14 Machinery results are likely to reflect what we view as a still mixed but improving macroeconomic environment that we think could support pockets of strength in Machinery end markets. In particular, we think both North American truck and North American energy markets continue to improve while global construction markets look supportive of continued solid/better-than-expected results (mostly from improved margin) in Caterpillar’s Construction segment. Solid truck, energy and construction markets seem supportive of earnings for Caterpillar as well as truck suppliers Cummins (CMI) and Allison Transmission Holdings (ALSN)…

    The 10-second takeaway
For the quarter ended June 30 (Q2), Costamare missed estimates on revenues and beat expectations on earnings per share.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Thinks aren't looking quite so auspicious for shares of small-cap Greek shipping stock Costamare (CMRE). Greek equities enjoyed some buoyancy this year, the result of getting oversold due to headline risk during the economic crisis in the Eurozone. But this stock's down days don't look behind it yet.

That's because Costamare is currently forming the bearish opposite of the bullish pattern in NTT: a descending triangle. CMRE's setup is formed by downtrending resistance above shares and horizontal support down at $16.75 that shares are getting pushed down into. A move through $16.75 is the signal to sell this stock.

Wh! enever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of buyers and sellers. Triangles, rectangles, and other price pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in this stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That support line at $16.75 is a price where there's an excess of demand of shares; in other words, it's a place where buyers have been more eager to jump in and buy at lower levels than sellers have been to unload them. That's what makes the move below it so significant -- a breakdown indicates that sellers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess demand below that price level. Wait for that signal to happen before you bet against CMRE.

5 Best Cheap Stocks To Invest In Right Now

This is a book that gets everything right in broad, but is too insistent on the details. How should you approach value investing from a purely quantitative standpoint? Easy:

Screen out stocks that have relatively high accruals

Avoid companies that may go bankrupt

Margin of safety: choose companies with strong balance sheets and profits

Look for long-term strength in profits.

Buy them cheap.

Buy when informed investors are buying.

But here's the problem. Like the book What Works on Wall Street, Quantitative Value suffers from over-optimization. You pass through the data too many times, and you show great returns from the past, should someone have done it that way. But how much of the result is signal, and how much is an accident?

The broad principles are unavoidably true. Even the measure of quality, Gross Profits as a fraction of Assets, was new to me, but when I read it, I realized that it was a proxy for having a moat, a sustainable competitive advantage. I added it to my screening framework.
