Top 5 Media Companies To Invest In 2015

The following video is from Wednesday's installment of The Motley Fool'sWeekly Tech Review, in which host Chris Hill, and analysts Eric Bleeker and Lyons George take a look at the biggest stories driving the tech sector this week.

In this segment, Eric and Lyons discuss a couple of major pieces of news surrounding Apple TV that leaked this week. First off,Bloombergis reporting that the company is nearing completion on a deal with Time Warner (NYSE: TWC  ) that could be completed within the coming months. The deal would give Time Warner cable subscribers access to watching programing and channels through an Apple TV.

The deal isn't unique in that other media players -- including Roku and Xbox -- have a deal with Time Warner. However, it does show a willingness from media companies to keep expanding content to entertainment devices.

Second, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) hired Hulu VP Pete Distad, who will take a key role in securing new content deals for the company. The hiring of Distad shows that Apple is getting more aggressive around securing content for its "TV" hobby.

Advisors' Opinion:

Its doubtful that federal antitrust regulators would ever allow Comcast (CMCSA) to buy the company because some might argue it would restrict competition. The company might be able to acquire Cablevision (CVC) if the Dolan family, which controls the smaller cable company, would sell. But that seems unlikely.

With no alternative candidates, there's no guarantee that directors will leave even if they fail to receive majority support. Consider the case of Cablevision (NYSE: CVC  ) . In 2010 and 2012, directors Thomas V. Reifenheiser, John R. Ryan, and Vincent S. Tese remained on the board even though they all failed to receive majority support in the company's 2010 and 2012 elections. Worse, Cablevision renominated the shunned directors yet again in 2013.

The analysts sound as if they believe CBS got the better of the deal-and the market appears to agree. Shares of CBS have gained 3.7% to $53.00, while Time Warner has gained 1.1% to $61.19. Shares of Disney (DIS) are little changed at $60.81, while shares of Cablevision Systems (CVC) have dropped 0.3% to $17.69.

If other cable companies — like Charter Communications (CHTR), Cablevision (CVC) and Cox Communications — decide to merge in order to keep pace with Comcast, content providers could be under the gun once more.

    No. 4: Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA  ) , $2.47 billion
Speaking of the most hated company in America -- at least in previous years Comcast takes fourth with nearly two-and-a-half billion in ad spending. Comcast is really pushing simplicity under one bill with its Xfinity offering, which combines phone, Internet, and cable under one plan. What this plan really appears to be is a disguised attempt to detract consumers from a growing trend of cutting ties with their landline phone. Although landlines aren't big growth drivers for Comcast anymore, their low maintenance costs result in big margins. Comcast is certainly doing what it can to improve its image, but it still has a long way to go with consumers.

DirecTV added 139,000 new subscribers in the quarter — the most since 2011, thanks to refugees from Time Warner Cable (TWC) and CBS (CBS) fee dispute.
