Two popular retailers–Michael Kors Holdings (KORS) and Ralph Lauren (RL)–have had a tough time in 2014, and both will report earnings this week. Will the results be enough to turn their years around?

We took a look at a note from Deutsche Bank analyst Dave Weiner, who was chock full of slightly positive yet unchanged sentiments on them both, for guidance.

For Michael Kors, which will report earnings tomorrow, Weiner maintained his rating and price target and accentuated some of the positive, writing hile many retailers and brands have reported disappointing holiday results, we are optimistic about the quarter and believe that Kors could deliver comp upside./p>

Weiner expects third-quarter EPS of 84 cents, in-line with the forecast of 83 cents to 85 cents and a penny shy of consensus. Weiner expects EPS of $2.78 in fiscal 2014, below the Street estimates of $2.83. Finally, for fiscal 2015, Weiner is looking for $3.49 in EPS ahead of the consensus estimate of $3.48.

Advisors' Opinion:

Three months ago I wrote that the stock performance YTD of independent ethanol producer Pacific Ethanol (PEIX) was an "aberration", especially in light of the performance of its industry peers' shares. The discrepancy between Pacific Ethanol's share price and those of its peers has only grown more pronounced since July (see figure). Green Plains Renewable Energy (GPRE) and REX American Resources (REX) have continued to greatly outperform the S&P 500. Even Biofuel Energy, which fell behind on its interest and debt payments over the summer and is facing a shareholder-ruining liquidation, has seen its share price perform significantly better than Pacific Ethanol's in 2013. The oddest part about the stock's performance over the last three months, however, is that the period has been marked by multiple positive announcements from the company. It late July it reported its first positive EPS in almost two years for Q2 (0.07). Its Q2 EBITDA of $3.8 million was its highest since Q4 2011. Its current ratio is well above its previous lows, its ratio of total assets to total liabilities is increasing, and its total shareholders' equity is at a 3-year high. Despite these improvements, the company's price/book ratio is a mere 0.77.

Aeropostale (ARO) fell 3.6% to $9.02 after the closing bell, at one point falling more than 5% to $8.88 as the company forecasta wider-than-expected fiscal fourth-quarter loss and the latest period’s results fellshortof thecompany’s and Wall Street’s expectations.

Late Wednesday, the teen retailer said the latest period’s loss was 29 cents a share, excluding one-time items.

Same-store sales fell, and gross margins narrowed.

Aeropostale faces challenges in its core basics business. Its graphic T-shirts and fleece offerings haven’t won overfashion-conscious teen shoppers. The retailer also has become a target for several activist investors.

Advisors' Opinion:

Last December I handicapped the three teen retailers. At the time I recommended American Eagle (AEO) as the smartest bet. That was before holiday sales results tanked and CEO Robert Hanson stepped down. Now I have no idea which of the three stands out. For me, I like ARO only because it got a good CEO in place and is acquisition fodder for private equity. Somebody will buy its business — and it won be for $7 and change a share.

Stocks ended a mini-losing streak on Friday, led by upbeat news from Intel (INTC). The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) rose 41 points, after sliding more than 200 over the previous two days. The Nasdaq composite (^IXIC) gained 13 and the Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC) added 6 points. Those modest gains did little to trim the loss for the week. The major averages posted their biggest weekly declines in more than two months. Intel is a component of all three big indexes, and it jumped 7 percent after raising its revenue guidance for the current quarter. The company sees stronger business demand for PCs than it previously expected. Intel shares are up 23 percent over the past six months. The Intel news had a ripple effect. Computer maker Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) rose more than 5 percent and Microsoft (MSFT) gained 1½ percent. Part of the increased demand Intel points to is tied to corporate buyers who need to replace their Windows XP machines, because Microsoft has stopped providing technical support for that platform. But Apple (AAPL) lost more than 1 percent. The stock is down since its 7-for-1 stock split took effect on Monday. There were two other big stories that had some legs beyond the companies directly involved. Open Table (OPEN) agreed to be acquired by Priceline (PCLN) for $2.6 billion. Open Table, which provides restaurant reservations, jumped 48 percent. Other online service providers rode the coattails of that deal. Yelp (YELP) gained 14 percent and Groupon (GRPN) gained 4 percent. In the retail arena, Express (EXPR) jumped 21 percent after a private equity firm took a 9.9 percent stake in the teen retailer and indicated it may make a buyout offer. That gave a boost to Aeropostale (ARO) and American Eagle (AEO), which both rose more than 2 percent. Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) gained 1½. Elsewhere, International Game Technology (IGT) gained 10½ percent on a Reuters report that a bidding war could erupt for
