  Shopping frenzy on Black Friday NEW YORK (CNNMoney) Even with deep price cuts and an extra day of shopping at many retailers, the holiday shopping season got off to a relatively weak start.

The National Retail Federation reported that shoppers spent an average of 4% less over the holiday weekend, the first decline in spending since 2009 when the recession cut deeply into spending.

Industry analyst ShopperTrak reported a modest 2.3% increase in spending on Thursday and Friday. But it said that spending at brick and mortar stores on Black Friday fell sharply compared to a year ago, as the consumers took advantage of Thanksgiving day openings.

"It's spreading the jam a bit thinner over a larger piece of bread," said Bill Martin, president of ShopperTrak, about the impact of the extra day of shopping.

    I should start by making one point very clear: while I like Whitestone, it is a very different kind of REIT than Realty Income or American Realty Capital Properties. Its property portfolio is far less geographically diversified (with properties in just three states), and it is a much smaller company by market cap ($290 million).

    That bodes well for Chevron, as well as other U.S. oil and gas producers looking to profit from the massive oil and gas reserves in the country -- including EOG Resources (NYSE: EOG  ) , which has already signed two exploration contracts and one farm-in agreement with YPF. The company is still in the very early stages of drilling in Vaca Muerta, so it remains to be seen how big its investment in the country will one day become. The company currently spends about $7 billion in capital each year; however, it has a 15-year drilling inventory just in its high-returning, liquids-rich U.S. onshore business. So a billion dollars in Argentina might be a bit of a stretch.

The company reported financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2013, highlighting a total net sales increase of 100.5% to $660.6 million in the second quarter of 2013 from $329.5 million in the second quarter of 2012. GAAP earnings per diluted share in the second quarter of 2013 were $(0.03). Adjusted EPS were $0.36 in the second quarter of 2013 as compared to GAAP EPS of $0.45 in the second quarter of 2012. GAAP net loss in the second quarter of 2013 was $1.6 million. The company reported adjusted net income of $22.3 million for the second quarter of 2013 as compared to GAAP net income of $29.1 million in the second quarter of 2012. Gross profit margin was 38.6% as compared to 50.7% in the second quarter of 2012.
